Heung-min Son’s classy reason for not wanting to leave Tottenham on a free transfer

0

A new report has shed light on why Heung-min Son preferred to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, even though the North London club were happy for him to stay for one more season.

Heung-min Son is expected to be announced as a Los Angeles FC player, with the forward playing his final game for Spurs at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Sunday.

While the 33-year-old’s decision did not come out of the blue, many Tottenham fans were still surprised and disappointed at Son’s decision to leave.

Thomas Frank had previously said that Son would have an important role under him if he stayed, which is perhaps why his decision comes as a surprise, and a new report has now shed light on why the Tottenham star called time on his spell at N17.

Heung-min Son wanted Tottenham to get a transfer fee for him

Football Asian have said that Frank had made it clear to Son privately that he would be an important player for Spurs during the upcoming season.

The report alleges that Tottenham were even prepared to hand the 33-year-old a one-year contract extension this summer, and were hopeful that their captain would stay for one more season.

However, Son concluded that leaving now would be the best for both himself and the club as they embark on a new project.

The outlet asserts that the South Korean did not want to depart as a free agent as he believed that the club deserved a transfer fee, given everything they had invested in him over the years.

That is why Son agreed to the activation of the one-year extension in his contract in January, as he wanted to ensure the club would benefit financially from his departure this summer.

Son felt he might hold Spurs back by staying this summer

Football Asian claim that Son felt that by choosing to stay for one more year, he might be holding the team back and become a burden to the manager and his teammates.

The 33-year-old seriously questioned his impact last season, and his decision was made due to a combination of physical, emotional, and professional factors.

It is revealed that the forward suffered four injuries last season and found that his recovery time had slowed. He thus became increasingly unsure of his ability to maintain peak performance levels.
