Mauricio Pochettino breaks his silence on Tottenham job after Thomas Frank appointment

0

A few weeks on from the appointment of Thomas Frank as Tottenham’s new head coach, Mauricio Pochettino has revealed whether Spurs contacted him and whether he was open to returning to the club he loves.

Before Frank’s appointment was confirmed, it was reported that Pochettino was one of the names high on Tottenham’s wishlist even though the Argentine was contracted to the United States national team.

In the second week of June, just days before Frank was confirmed as the club’s new head coach, Pochettino ruled himself out of the running for the Spurs job, insisting that a return to N17 is not realistic at the moment.

This is despite Pochettino admitting back in March that he still has unfinished business at Tottenham and would like to return to the club one day to win a trophy.

Mauricio Pochettino sets record straight about Tottenham return

The 53-year-old has now explained his stance on a return to N17 more elaborately, making it clear that Daniel Levy never reached out to him.

The Argentine coach insisted that returning to Tottenham Hotspur was never an option this summer but admitted that he still has a lot of affection for the Lilywhites, referring to them as “my club”.

When asked if a return to Spurs was on the cards for him this summer, Pochettino told Fox Sports (as relayed by The Mirror): “The club never contacted me. I never talked to them. Since I left in 2019, for the position of the manager or the head coach, my name has been appearing on every list!

“If you are seeing the rumours I’ve seen, there are 100 coaches on their list! Don’t be worried about that. If something happened, you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing.

“If something happened, for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it’s not real. It’s not realistic. Look at where I am, where we are. And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we’re talking about it because it’s my club, like Newells or Espanyol.”

Why Daniel Levy did not consider a Pochettino reunion this summer

It has been claimed by some sources that Pochettino is protected by a release clause of $25m (£19.3m) in his contract with the United States.

That means that Pochettino would have cost Tottenham double what they paid for Frank, who was already one of the most expensive managerial signings in history.

It was revealed by BBC Sport two weeks ago that Pochettino’s high release clause was one of the main reasons Spurs did not pursue him.
