Tottenham fans frustrated by latest Archie Gray decision despite England U21 success

0

Tottenham fans were left scratching their heads once again after Archie Gray failed to feature for England Under-21s in their latest outing, fuelling concerns about his development and talent.

In football, while a player’s versatility is often praised as a great quality to possess, it could also be a major problem for youngsters who are developing, as they often get thrown around in different positions, which sometimes hinders their development as a specialist in a certain role.

Of course, 18-year-old Archie Gray has earned loads of plaudits for his ability to play across the backline and also in midfield for Tottenham, as he filled in admirably in those positions last season, following the injuries to key defenders, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

However, with the England Under-21s, he seems to be struggling to get minutes and has delivered a few subpar performances, as he continues to be deployed out of position, thanks to his versatility.

Tottenham fans question Lee Carsley’s treatment of Archie Gray

In England’s last group stage match, Gray was used as a full-back, a decision that did not sit well with the Lilywhites faithful, as the 18-year-old was hooked off a little over the hour mark.

In the Three Lions’ most recent clash, head coach Lee Carsley has now made another decision that has left Spurs fans frustrated, as Gray was not involved in England’s 3-1 win over Spain in the quarter-finals, not even used as a substitute.

Following Lee Carsley’s decision to bench the youngster, Tottenham supporters took to X to share their frustration at him failing to make the team.

One Spurs fan said: “Most Spurs fans told me Archie Gray was well worth £40m when I raised the question when he signed, hope he proves to be in the end.

“I am not one for writing youngsters off early, I just hope Frank and his coaching team can get the best out of him.”

Another fan could not believe that he was benched for England Under-21: “Archie Gray being benched for Tyler Morton is really weird.”

Another added: “Worrying that Archie Gray is struggling to get game time with England Under-21s. I would not be against selling him if we can get close to what we paid.”

One more chimed in: “Archie Gray does not even get in the England Under-21s side but he is supposed to be a generational talent.”

Thomas Frank’s arrival could be key for Gray at Spurs

While Tottenham fans have the right to be frustrated with how the teenager’s development has gone so far, the appointment of Thomas Frank could work well for Gray.

It is no secret that the former Brentford manager was keen on bringing Gray to west London last season, before a move was hijacked by Tottenham.

Frank is now the head coach of Spurs and will finally have the opportunity to work with the teenager he once wanted to sign.

Indeed, with the Dane at the helm, one would expect that Gray would be moved around less if Tottenham can strengthen their squad, which would allow the head coach to develop Gray in his preferred position as a defensive midfielder.
