Analysing Thomas Frank’s start to last season ahead of Tottenham’s first five fixtures

0

For Tottenham fans wondering what to expect from Thomas Frank’s reign next season, we have found early clues in his start to last season – and it is not all plain sailing, as we analysed his opening five games from the 24/25 season.

Every Tottenham Hotspur fan out there would be hoping for a better domestic campaign after the club’s horrid showing last season, where they finished in the bottom four of the league, following 22 defeats.

Getting off to a strong start is crucial for the Lilywhites, and with opening clashes that see them play a variety of sides in the Premier League, including newly promoted Burnley, former Premier League champions Manchester City, and the likes of Brighton and West Ham United, Thomas Frank is sure to have his work cut out for him.

However, the Premier League is not unfamiliar territory for the Danish manager, who has managed in the English top flight in the last three seasons, securing top-half finishes twice during that spell.

Frank had a mixed start to last season with Brentford

In Thomas Frank’s first matchup of the 2024/25 campaign, his Brentford side gave a good account of themselves when they took on fellow London side Crystal Palace at the G-tech Community Stadium, a clash the Bees ultimately won, beating Oliver Glasner’s side 2-1.

The second clash of the previous season was a difficult one, with the Bees clashing against the eventual Premier League winners Liverpool at Anfield, a tie the West London club lost 2-0.

Matchday three offered some respite and saw Frank’s Brentford return to winning ways, as they emerged victorious against newly promoted Southampton at the G-tech Stadium, beating them 3-1.

As for matchday four, the tough opponents returned, and this time it was Manchester City at the Etihad.

Brentford lost 2-1, but Pep Guardiola was quick to praise Frank’s side, calling them hard to beat before predicting it was only a matter of time before Thomas Frank secured a move to a bigger European side.

In matchday five, a trip to North London was next on the agenda, as the Bees went visiting the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Indeed, it was yet another defeat for Frank’s side, as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham secured a 3-1 win against Brentford in what was their penultimate clash in September.

What Tottenham fans can take from Thomas Frank’s early record

Undoubtedly, it was a tricky first five games for Thomas Frank last season, as he faced three of the traditional big six clubs, games he eventually lost, with the closest scoreline being a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

However, when up against sides he was expected to beat, Thomas Frank did secure all three points against them in his opening five games of last season, beating Crystal Palace and Southampton.

For Tottenham, their opening five games in the 2025/26 season see them come up against: Burnley (H), Manchester City (A), Bournemouth (H), West Ham United (A), and Brighton (A) – all tricky fixtures.

Given that Frank had a good home record in the opening five games last season, where he won his two home games, we can expect the same during his opening five at Spurs, with at least two wins.

The game against Manchester City could go either way, as Tottenham do have a good record at the Etihad. Of course, we believe Thomas Frank could pick up at least ten points from his opening five games in charge of Spurs, which would be a decent start.
