Report: Tottenham yet to make contact over deal for 18-cap international despite having a big advantage

0

Amid reports that Atletico Madrid are heavily keen to secure to the signature of Johnny Cardoso, a new report from Spain has made a very surprising claim about the Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer stance on the Real Betis player.

Various reports have continued to suggest over the last few months that Cardoso is near the top of Tottenham’s wishlist, with the club expected to activate the £21m option to buy the midfielder this summer.

However, over the last few days, Spurs have been relegated to outsiders in the race for the USA international.

We have seen suggestions that Tottenham’s purchase option for Cardoso is set to be wasted since the midfielder prefers a move to Atletico Madrid, who are extremely keen on acquiring his services.

Tottenham may not proceed with Johnny Cardoso transfer

A report from Spanish news outlet Diario de Sevilla has claimed the 23-year-old is happy at the Benito Villamarin Stadium.

However, that does not mean that he is guaranteed to stay, with Cardoso thought to be open to joining a club where he can compete at a higher level and earn more money than he currently does at Betis.

Rather curiously, the report says that Spurs have not contacted either Betis or the midfielder’s representatives to inform them that they intend to trigger the purchase option.

The outlet claims this is because Cardoso is ‘not of great interest’ to the Lilywhites, although the publication does add that the Premier League side’s stance may change over the coming weeks.

Could Tottenham’s hesitation on Cardoso be down to the future of one Spurs man?

Diario de Sevilla’s claim that Tottenham are not overly keen on a deal for Cardoso may take many people by surprise, particularly given that reinforcements in midfield are reported to be one of Spurs’ priorities this summer.

There are few better number sixes in La Liga at the moment than Cardoso, and the fact that they can sign him on a discount makes the deal a no-brainer for the North Londoners.

However, their hesitation might have to do with the change in the fortunes of one Tottenham man.

It was reported until a month or two ago that Yves Bissouma was set to leave Spurs this summer, but after the Mali international had a strong end to the season, the Lilywhites may be reconsidering their decision.
