Tottenham fans want Ange Postecoglou to bring old midfielder back as free agent
Tottenham fans have made their voices heard – and many want to see a familiar face return to N17 on a free transfer this summer.
The 2024/25 campaign ended in utter jubilation for Tottenham Hotspur, as the club finally brought silverware back to north London after a 17-year wait.
A narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final sparked wild celebrations, ensuring the season closed on a high.
With that emotional triumph now in the rear-view mirror, attention swiftly turns to the transfer market and what moves Tottenham can make to ensure continued progression under Ange Postecoglou heading into the 2025/26 campaign.
There are already confirmed steps being taken – Spurs are set to pay RC Lens £21 million to complete the agreed obligation to buy centre-back Kevin Danso.
Meanwhile, there is still a decision to be made on Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel, with a £46 million option on the table should Tottenham wish to keep him permanently.
Tottenham fans want to sign Luka Modric on a free
Tottenham Hotspur could also explore the free agent market, with several experienced names available on a pre-contract, and one of such is Luka Modric.
The Croatian maestro has officially departed Real Madrid after 13 years at the Bernabeu – and is now free to choose his next destination.
With Modric now a free agent, we took to social media to ask Tottenham fans whether they would welcome a romantic return for the former fan favourite. The responses, as expected, were mixed – some keen on the idea, others firmly against it.
One fan bluntly replied: “We need to start thinking like a big club. Tottenham is not a retirement home.” Another added a more balanced view: “Yes but he should not be expected to be a starter.”
Others pointed to the value he could add off the pitch, particularly in mentoring young players like Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr: “100% – what Bergvall and Sarr could learn from him would be invaluable, also broader dressing room mentality…”
Several fans were enthusiastic about a return regardless of game time. “Yes, not even about playing time, his wages are worth what he brings to the players and squad. Would help develop so many of our young players + still a quality player in him,” one comment read.
Another said: “If he can hold down a starting spot or is happy to be a squad player then yes, I would love to see him here for a farewell season. Not on those wages though.”
Perhaps the most definitive response summed it up best: “No brainer for me if it is possible. He is still an excellent player and the young midfielders we have got spending a year with him would be invaluable.”
Modric’s experience could benefit a young Spurs squad
Modric is certainly no stranger to North London. The Croatian spent four seasons at Tottenham, making over 150 appearances in all competitions before departing for Real Madrid in 2012.
Naturally, given that he is now approaching 40 years of age, no one would expect him to start every match.
However, as many fans pointed out, the sheer wealth of experience and professionalism he brings would have a strong impact in the dressing room.
Modric has won everything there is to win in the game. He knows how to manage big occasions and maintain elite standards, which is exactly what Tottenham will need as they return to the UEFA Champions League and prepare for a season competing across multiple fronts.
