Tottenham break a unique all-time record by winning the Europa League

0

Tottenham Hotspur may have endured a dismal league campaign, but their Europa League triumph has etched their name into the record books in the most unlikely of ways.

The 2024/25 season has only just concluded, and Tottenham Hotspur have experienced both ends of the footballing spectrum in a truly dramatic fashion.

There is no denying the fact that it has been a Premier League campaign to forget for the Lilywhites, who have finished the League season, languishing in 17th place, just a single spot above the relegation zone.

Tottenham ended their domestic campaign with a negative goal difference, slumped to 22 defeats in the league, and failed to hit the 40-point mark, crawling over the line with just 38 points from 38 games.

Tottenham break record as lowest-placed European trophy winners

However, all of that would matter little to the Spurs faithful, who have been in full voice celebrating the club’s recent European success, after they defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final to clinch their first European trophy in four decades.

A remarkable statistic has now emerged, further highlighting the gulf between Tottenham’s domestic woes and their European achievement.

According to data from Livescore, Tottenham Hotspur are now officially the lowest-placed league side to ever win a European trophy in football history, a record that paints a striking picture of their unique season.

The previous holders of this record were fellow London side West Ham United, who managed to win the UEFA Conference League in 2022/23 despite finishing 14th in the Premier League.

Now, with Tottenham ending their league campaign in 17th while also winning the Europa League, they have taken that record from West Ham – and truth be told, the fans will not be losing any sleep over it.

Tottenham’s European win puts spotlight on 2025/26 ambitions

Following their most recent cup triumph, Tottenham Hotspur are now set to return to the UEFA Champions League, having last featured in the competition during the 2022/23 season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side will also have the opportunity to go for another piece of silverware when they take on the winners of the UEFA Champions League in the UEFA Super Cup later this year.

With Champions League football now secured and additional funds expected to bolster their summer budget, Tottenham are in a strong position to attract higher-calibre players and build on their recent European success ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
