'People make jokes' - Spurs player desperate for Europa League trophy success for fans and Ange Postecoglou
Micky van de Ven has spoken about the criticism that Ange Postecoglou has had to deal with for almost the entirety of the 2024/25 season and has explained why he and his teammates are determined to win the Europa League title for the Australian.
Postecoglou has spoken about always winning trophies during his second season in charge of other clubs and will be hoping to keep his proud record intact when his side takes to the field for the Europa League final against Manchester United on Wednesday.
However, he does not appear to have a future at N17, with reports indicating Postecoglou is unlikely to remain Tottenham manager regardless of the outcome of the final.
What is clear is that the head coach has not lost the support of the dressing room, with several of the Tottenham first-team squad speaking out in support of him over recent days.
Guglielmo Vicario claimed nobody wants to win the Europa League as much as Postecoglou, while midfielder Yves Bissouma said the Spurs players are keen to repay Postecoglou’s faith in them.
Micky van de Ven is desperate for Ange Postecoglou’s prediction to come true
Micky van de Ven has become the latest Tottenham star to sing the praises of his manager, admitting that he and his teammates are desperate to bring the trophy home to N17 for the boss.
The centre-back emphasises how positive Postecoglou has been throughout the season, claiming that the 59-year-old’s belief is one of the main reasons why the side has made a European final.
When asked about the criticism that Postecoglou has been receiving for much of the campaign, Van de Ven said ahead of the showdown in Bilbao (via GQ Magazine): “We want to win for the gaffer, of course. Everyone knows he’s said he always wins things in his second year [at a club]. It’s a nice quote for him, and it would make it even more beautiful if we could make it happen!
“He has been so positive the whole season and made sure that no one ever lets their head down, even if we played a terrible game. We never had a feeling that he was giving up on us; he’s always kept pushing us. That’s why at the end of a tough season, we still believe we will win.”
Van de Ven wants to change how Tottenham are perceived
Last week, Van de Ven is desperate to get rid of the ‘Spursy’ tag by winning the Europa League final.
The Dutchman has now reiterated a similar sentiment, remarking that he and his teammates are keen to silence Tottenham’s critics and create history at the San Mames on Wednesday.
The former Wolfsburg man said: “If you join Spurs, of course, people make jokes that you’re never going to win a trophy. This group of players and staff want to make sure we change this for the fans and the club.
“We’ve had a really tough season, so we want to end positively, for us, and for the fans, for how they have supported us this season.”
