Ange Postecoglou reveals why Rodrigo Bentancur was absent for Tottenham

0

Tottenham fans will have had their heart in their mouth when they noticed that Rodrigo Bentancur was not part of the club’s matchday squad at Liverpool, but the supporters can breathe a sigh of relief after Ange Postecoglou’s latest admission.

With Tottenham Hotspur having more than half an eye on the first leg of their Europa League semifinal against Bodo/Glimt, as expected, Postecoglou heavily rotated his squad for the trip to Anfield.

Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Pape Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski were all on the bench in Merseyside as Liverpool cantered to the Premier League title.

However, Rodrigo Bentancur did not even find a place on the bench, which raised some alarm bells on social media.

Ange Postecoglou explains Rodrigo Bentancur’s Tottenham absence

The Uruguayan will have a crucial role to play in the Europa League semifinal, and a potential injury for him would have come as a massive blow for the Lilywhites ahead of their clash against Bodo/Glimt.

However, Postecoglou has now eased those fears by explaining that the experienced midfielder has just been handed a rest so that he is fresh for the big European clash.

When asked if Bentancur is injured, the Tottenham boss said ahead of kick-off at Anfield (via Football.Lodnon): “He’s fine, a bit like Destiny last week. He’s played a lot recently and we felt like he would benefit from a weekend off, similar to Destiny last week.”

Spurs still sweating on Heung-min Son’s fitness ahead of Bodo/Glimt clash

Another big absentee from the matchday squad at Liverpool was captain Heung-min Son.

The South Korean is currently recovering from a foot injury, although Postecoglou has refused to rule out Son playing a part against Bodo/Glimt.

However, should the 32-year-old not recover in time for the first leg, there will be a starting berth up for grabs. Mathys Tel could make that his own, while Wilson Odobert or Richarlison may also sneak into the side on the left side of attack.
