Tottenham beaten to the first punch by Chelsea in race for Jamie Gittens

0

Chelsea have now reportedly reached out to the representatives of Jamie Gittens, who is thought to be near the top of Tottenham’s summer transfer wishlist.

Tottenham’s forward line has not performed to the level that Ange Postecoglou might have expected this season, with Heung-min Son falling short of his high standards while the likes of Brennan Johnson have been plagued by inconsistency.

Meanwhile, Mathys Tel is yet to really set the world alight in a Tottenham shirt, which is why one would expect the Lilywhites to prioritise additions to their attack this summer.

One Bundesliga starlet is thought to have caught the North London club’s attention, with reports over recent weeks claiming that Spurs are keen on signing Jamie Gittens on the back of his outstanding showing for a struggling Borussia Dortmund side this season.

Some sources have even suggested that Tottenham are willing to break their transfer record to sign Gittens, with the decision-makers at the club said to be big fans of the 20-year-old.

Chelsea make advances towards signing Gittens this summer

However, according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, it is Tottenham’s London rivals who have become the first to make contact for Jamie Gittens.

The journalist says that Chelsea are showing a ‘concrete interest’ in Gittens and have already held talks with the player’s entourage regarding a summer switch to Stamford Bridge.

Plettenberg adds that the Blues are willing to double the England Under-21 international’s current salary and explains that the Bundesliga club would be prepared to sell the player for a fee of around €50–€60m (£42.8m-£51.4m).

Can Tottenham beat Chelsea to Jamie Gittens?

It will be difficult for Spurs to persuade Jamie Gittens to pick them over Chelsea, particularly given that there is no certainty on who Tottenham’s manager will be in the summer.

One would think that at the very least, the Lilywhites have to qualify for the Champions League to be able to compete for a player of the Dortmund man’s quality.

Winning the Europa League will thus be extremely crucial for Spurs’ summer rebuild, particularly when you consider that the North Londoners do not tend to pay the sort of wages that some of their rivals do.
