Tottenham told they can ‘kick on’ under Ange Postecoglou next season

0

Alan Hutton has explained why he wants Tottenham Hotspur to show faith in Ange Postecoglou and give him a chance to show what he can do next season, even though the Lilywhites’ Premier League form continues to go from bad to worse.

Tottenham fell to their 18th defeat of the season against Nottingham Forest, and Postecoglou is now on course to set several unwanted records, including the club’s worst-ever points tally in a single campaign.

It has been widely reported that Spurs have already begun working on a potential replacement for Postecoglou this summer, even though the club still have a shot at winning the Europa League.

It remains to be seen if winning the trophy proves to be enough for the 59-year-old to keep his job, but one former Tottenham Hotspur man feels that the Australian deserves another crack next season.

Alan Hutton wants Ange Postecoglou to build on Tottenham foundations

Alan Hutton has admitted that despite Tottenham’s ugly league record this season, there have been some positive signs for the Lilywhites, insisting that they have simply shot themselves in the foot on too many occasions.

The pundit suggested that Spurs can kick on next season under Postecoglou if they can get their hands on the Europa League.

When asked if he thinks the Tottenham boss will be sacked in the summer, the Scot told Football Insider: “I hope not. Look, I really like him, as a guy and as a manager. Obviously, I’ve met him a good few times when he was up here at Celtic.

“Look, pressure can make you act in certain ways, and it’s definitely a pressurised situation that he’s at, at this moment in time. I think he’s got good ideas and how he sees the game and how he wants it to kind of work out in front of him.

“They [Tottenham] just tend to kind of shoot themselves in the foot from time to time in terms of conceding goals, and they play quite open. Everybody loves watching Tottenham because there’s going to be goals or there’s going to be action, something’s going to happen.

“So I hope he can keep his job and then build because the squad is strong, and if he adds one or two, then hopefully he can kick on. I think they need to win the Europa League, to be quite honest with you, because the league form, I mean, losing 18 games is probably not acceptable at a club of that size. So he’ll understand that needs to turn round.”

League form is a much better measure of a side’s progress

Winning the Europa League will undoubtedly be hugely significant for Tottenham, given how starved of success Spurs fans have been over the last two decades.

However, a team’s form in the league is a much better gauge of their progress than their performances in cup competitions.

That is demonstrated by the fact that the last Spurs manager to win a trophy was Juande Ramos, who proceeded to get two points in his first eight league games of the 2008-09 season, forcing Levy to pull the plug.
