Ange Postecoglou questions lack of media scrutiny about Lucas Bergvall incident

0

Ange Postecoglou has spoken about Lucas Bergvall’s penalty decision getting turned down in the second half against Fulham, and has made a rather interesting observation about the lack of media scrutiny about the incident.

It was a very cagey encounter between Fulham and Spurs at Craven Cottage on Sunday, with the home side emerging winners courtesy of two late goals.

However, in between those two goals, Tottenham had a big penalty shout being turned down after Lucas Bergvall was brought down in the box.

The Swede, who came on at half-time in place of Yves Bissouma, took the ball past Calvin Bassey before the Fulham defender seemed to bring him down, but the referee waved away the protests.

Replays showed that Bassey did not get any of the ball and the Tottenham midfielder went down over the Fulham man’s outstretched leg, but VAR did not ask referee Andy Madley to re-watch the incident on the touchline monitor.

Postecoglou refused to speak too much about the incident but questioned why there is a lot of media scrutiny when his side get a controversial decision in their favour, but everyone goes silent when a key decision goes against them.

When asked about the Bergvall penalty shout, the Tottenham boss said (via Football.London): “I’ll leave that to the officials, but I will say that we don’t carry on like a lot of other clubs and I think that hurts us for sure. I don’t think there’s ever any noise around us and decisions.

“We get one slightly in our favour and there’s national headlines for a week. Things go against us and there’s not even a sentence on it.”

Postecoglou insists Spurs were in control of second half

The Australian coach revealed that he expected a tight game against the Cottagers and admitted that his side did not make great use of the ball in the first period.

However, he insisted that they were in control of the game after the interval and rued the fact that they conceded soft goals yet again.

Postecoglou added about his side’s 2-0 defeat: “It was a tight game and we knew it would be — it always is here. It’s a tight ground and you know when you go that it is not going to be open. First half defensively we were pretty solid and they didn’t really create anything.

“We weren’t great with the ball and didn’t create much ourselves but I thought the second half started really positively and had a couple of really good chances to get in front. We were definitely in much better control.

“Like we have done a lot of times this year we concede a soft goal. That just gives the opposition everything to gain from and get momentum out of it and the game gets away from us.”
