Tottenham player ratings vs AZ Alkmaar – 9/10 duo send the Lilywhites marching on
It’s full-time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Spurs have gone marching into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League with a 3-1 win over AZ Alkmaar – it’s time for our player ratings.
Let’s take a look at how the individual Tottenham players got on across the 90 minutes with ratings from 1-10.
Tottenham player ratings vs AZ Alkmaar
Guglielmo Vicario: Had a quiet first half and began the second by miscontrolling the ball and almost causing his team some unnecessary problems. He was unable to stop Alkmaar getting on the scoresheet, but the goal wasn’t his fault. Made some really important claims to kill the nerves at the end. 7
Pedro Porro: Did his job okay tonight on the whole. It wasn’t his best performance in a Tottenham shirt, but it was a long way off his worst. 6
Cristian Romero: It wasn’t Romero’s greatest game on Sunday and it was a similar story tonight. Some great passing with the ball at his feet but he went to sleep defensively after Van de Ven went off. The Argentine defender looks like he needs more time to get back to his best. 6
Micky van de Ven: Stopped a promising counter-attack from Ernest Poku with a crucial tackle when Tottenham gave the ball away from a free kick. Having only played half an hour on Sunday, it makes sense that Ange Postecoglou took him off on the hour mark. He can’t afford to take any risks with the injury-prone centre-back. 7.5
Djed Spence: Conceded possession a lot in the first half and in the second he lost the ball and failed to track back which allowed Tory Parrott a shot on goal. He did play a part in Tottenham’s third goal, however, making a run round the outside of Son and playing a cross to Solanke. 6.5
Pape Matar Sarr: Didn’t really contribute much to the team. It’s hard to see how he affected the game at all. 5
Lucas Bergvall: Bossed the midfield for the best part of an hour, but made a really poor error as he passed the ball to a teammate with very little space which led to Alkmaar’s goal. Similar to last week, he made one big mistake, but played well the rest of the game. 8
James Maddison: Looked composed in Tottenham’s midfield and took his opportunity just minutes into the second half with a lovely finish into the bottom right. He was involved in the build-up and he was the one to initially put Spurs ahead in the tie, securing his 11th goal this season. He later went on an excellent dribble which built up to Spurs taking a 3-1 lead on the night. 9
Wilson Odobert: Scored Tottenham’s opening goal, but failed to communicate effectively with Bergvall as Tottenham conceded a disastrous giveaway. He bounced back though and scored his second of the night. 9
Dominic Solanke: Assisted Odobert in both halves. His second assist was quite special as he sent a backheel into a perfect position. 7
Heung-Min-Son: Played an important part in Tottenham’s first goal with his press and assisted Maddison for the second with a selfless pass. He was also involved in the build-up of their third goal. Son showed a lot of passion tonight and some of his contributions proved to be important, but not everything he tried was a success. 8
Substitutes:
Archie Gray: Tottenham conceded shortly after Gray came on, but he wasn’t responsible for that goal. 6
Yves Bissouma: Threw himself at a close-range effort not long after coming on. Vicario had it covered, but it was great defensive initiative from Tottenham’s Malian. 6
Brennan Johnson: Didn’t have long to impact the game. N/A
Ben Davies: Replaced Bergvall with a few minutes left to play. N/A
