Andrei Ratiu reacts to speculation about potential Tottenham transfer
Andrei Ratiu, who Tottenham Hotspur have been credited with an interest in, has now responded to the speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League side at the end of the season.
Ange Postecoglou has been rotating between Pedro Porro, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie in the full-back roles, with the Englishman’s ability to thrive in either flank coming as a big boost to the Australian and giving him a selection headache ahead of the big games coming up.
It was reported last week that the Australian wants to add to his stocks in the full-back areas in the summer, with Tottenham turning their attention to Rayo Vallecano right-back Andrei Ratiu.
The 26-year-old, who is the international teammate of Spurs centre-back Radu Dragusin, shone in the Euros last summer and has carried on his impressive form in La Liga so far this campaign.
Andrei Ratiu breaks silence on his future
The print edition of the Spanish newspaper ABC (as relayed by Sport Witness) now reports that Tottenham’s pursuit of Ratiu will not be easy as a few clubs around the continent have now entered the race for his signature.
It was revealed that apart from Spurs, the likes of Barcelona, AS Roma, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta are all ‘fighting’ to land the right-back.
The outlet also spoke to the player, who made it clear that his focus right now is entirely on ensuring that Rayo Vallecano stay up.
When asked about the speculation over his future, Ratiu told the publication: “Honestly, I am very focused on Rayo and the national team. We have the objective of staying up, which is not yet a reality. Look at what happened to Las Palmas last year.”
Why a move for Ratiu would not make sense for Tottenham
Spurs not only have Porro and Spence for the right-back role but also have another competent option in Archie Gray, who has shown that he can fill in there if required.
A new left-back would thus be a far more pressing need for Postecoglou this summer than a right-back, particularly with Ben Davies’ contract coming to an end this summer.
The Australian may want another top-class option to offer regular competition to Destiny Udogie, who has not been able to match the high standards he set for himself last term.
