Harry Kane could impact Tottenham’s summer transfer business – Paul Robinson

0

Paul Robinson believes that the reason Tottenham pushed ahead with a move for Mathys Tel might have something to do with the Harry Kane agreement that the Lilywhites struck with Bayern Munich back in 2023.

Mathys Tel has struggled to make much of an impact since arriving at Spurs in the dying stages of the January window, with the 19-year-old having looked like a passenger when asked to lead the line during Dominic Solanke’s absence.

The teenager could now get an opportunity to impress on the flanks after Solanke’s return from injury as he strives to show Ange Postecoglou and the Tottenham supporters what he can do.

Postecoglou insists Spurs intend to take the option to buy Mathys Tel permanently, but it remains to be seen if doubts start creeping into the Australian’s mind about the youngster if he continues to struggle.

Paul Robinson makes Harry Kane claim about Mathys Tel

Paul Robinson has admitted that he has not been impressed by Tel’s performances so far, remarking that the newcomer might be better suited to playing on the flank than as a number nine.

The former Tottenham goalkeeper suggested that Spurs may have been tempted to do the deal for the France Under-21 international due to the money they were owed by Bayern Munich for the Harry Kane transfer.

When asked about his impressions of Tel, Robinson told Football Insider: “I haven’t been impressed by him so far. He’s not a number nine, so it’s been difficult for him.

“There are a lot of questions that I have about Tel, you look at his age and he’s seen as one of the best talents in Europe, why would he sign for Tottenham? They’re 15th in the Premier League.

“Whether there’s something involved with the Harry Kane deal and there’s some financial offset with that, maybe that’s the situation. I don’t think he’s a number nine, he’s been playing there because Dominic Solanke is injured. He’s a wide attacking player, similar to the others they’ve already got in those areas.”

Ange Postecoglou reveals where he sees Mathys Tel playing

Ange Postecolgou confessed earlier this week that he wants to use Tel on the left rather than as a central striker, with the Australian coach backing the forward to come good in Tottenham’s colours.

With Solanke now back to lead the line for Spurs, the supporters might soon get to see how the Bayern loanee does in a new role.

Postecoglou said about Tel a few days ago: “Initially my view was that he would probably play in a wide area for us. Once Solanke was back I’m keen to try him out there.

“The first game he played out wide on the left, you can see he’s really comfortable there or out wide on the right. I think he’ll get more opportunities there.”
