Kevin Danso reveals why he rejected Wolves for ‘big club’ Tottenham

Kevin Danso has been speaking about his decision to reject a move to Wolves in favour of joining Tottenham in January and has shed light on the conversation he had with Ange Postecoglou prior to his switch from Lens.

Kevin Danso has hit the ground running since arriving at Tottenham during the January window, with the defender playing like someone who has been at the club for a full year instead of just a month.

He has seamlessly fitted in the Spurs backline and Ange Postecoglou has also praised Danso for his leadership qualities and the impact he has had on the dressing room.

Kevin Danso reveals what attracted him to Tottenham

It was widely reported when the centre-back arrived in North London that Tottenham hijacked Wolves’ deal for Danso after the Midlands club had reached an agreement with Lens.

The 26-year-old has now explained that he could not say no when a club of the stature of Tottenham came calling for him.

When asked about the fact that he nearly went to Wolves in January, Danso said (via Football.London): “I’m here now and I try not to think too much about what happened in the past. I can’t change that. I can’t do much about that. I think when a club like Spurs comes knocking, it’s something that I don’t think a lot of people would turn down. Certainly not me. That’s why I am here today.”

The Austrian international looks set to feature in a huge Europa League round of 16 clash at Alkmaar this evening, and he admits that these sorts of games were one of the things that attracted him to Spurs.

When asked if playing European football was a big part of his motivation to come to N17, the defender responded: “Yeah, 100 per cent. I think Spurs is a big club and we have the chance to play in Europe. That is where Spurs belong.

“That is what we want to achieve every season, to continue adding to the history, hopefully with some trophies — that is what we are setting out to do. It starts tomorrow by coming out and trying to win the game.”

Danso opens up Ange Postecoglou conversation before Spurs switch

A lot of Tottenham’s signings over the last 18 months have referred to their conversation with Postecoglou as one of the main things that convinced them about moving to N17.

It was widely reported last month that it was Postecoglou’s conversation with Matyhs Tel that led to the forward changing his mind after he had initially rejected Spurs’ approach.

However, Danso confessed that he did not need much convincing from the Tottenham head coach about the move.

When asked if the chat with Postecoglou helped make up his mind about the transfer, the centre-back responded: “It didn’t take much for me to be honest. But it was really short and sweet – he just quickly gave me an insight into the idea of how he wants to play. It was very brief and he just told me the idea of what his team stands for. After that, I was 100% sure.”
