Former Real Madrid man says Tottenham team was the best he ever played in

Rafael van der Vaart played for a star-studded Real Madrid side, which included the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and several other big names, but he explains why the Tottenham side he played in was the best team he has been part of.

Van der Vaart might have only spent two seasons at Tottenham, but he is remembered very fondly by the Spurs faithful, with the midfielder wearing his heart on his sleeve and oozing class on the pitch.

The attacking midfielder played for a formidable Spurs side, which contained the likes of Ledley King, Kyle Walker, Scott Parker, Luka Modric, Aaron Lennon, Gareth Bale, Jermain Defoe and other big names.

The Dutchman admits that he looks back very fondly on his time in North London and he has made a big claim about the Tottenham team he was part of.

The 42-year-old claims the Spurs team he was part of was the most talented set-up he played in, despite being part of some incredible teams with the Netherlands and Real Madrid.

He admits that he was enjoying the freedom that he was given to express himself on the pitch by Harry Redknapp.

When asked about the Tottenham team that he was part of, Van der Vaart said (via talkSPORT): “Before this interview, I was thinking about that time, you think, ‘Wow, that was maybe the best team I ever played in.

“I think you have different phases in your career. Of course, Ajax especially in the beginning. Then I moved to Hamburg and I had a great time.

“But when you look at team, quality, talent and potential … I think I had the best time at Tottenham. Also with Harry Redknapp of course, a coach that I really liked because he gave me so much freedom on the pitch.”

While the team that Van der Vaart was part of might not have been as strong as the one Mauricio Pochettino had from around 2017, it was arguably the most entertaining Spurs side to watch of the Premier League era.

The way Van der Vaart, Modric and Parker dominated the midfield battle in every game was a joy to watch while seeing Bale and Lennon on the flank struck fear into most Premier League defences.
