Tottenham face a trip to Spain or Netherlands for Europa League Round of 16

0

Tottenham Hotspur have just learned their two potential opponents for the Round of Sixteen stages of the Europa League as Ange Postecoglou’s men get ready to turn their attention back to winning a trophy this season.

While there is no doubt that Ange Postecoglou will want Spurs to move up from the position they find themselves in the Premier League table, the Australian’s main focus over the next few months will be on the Europa League.

The competition represents the club’s only chance of winning silverware this season, while also offering a chance to seal entry into the Champions League next year.

The Lilywhites have now discovered which two clubs they could face in the next round when the competition restarts in March with the Round of 16 stage.

Who will Tottenham face in the Europa League knockouts?

Tottenham already knew ahead of Thursday night’s fixtures that they would be playing either the winner of Galatasaray and AZ Alkmaar, or the victor of Real Sociedad vs FC Midtjylland.

The Lilywhites have now learned that they will be taking on either Real Sociedad or AZ Alkmaar after the two teams from Spain and the Netherlands came out on top in their respective ties.

Sociedad beat Midtjylland 5-2 at home in a seven-goal thriller to add to their 2-1 away victory in the first leg. AZ Alkmaar pulled off a shock 4-1 home win over Turkish giants Galatasaray, before seeing out a 2-2 away draw to get the job done.

Whatever happens, Tottenham will have the advantage of playing the second leg of their Europa League tie at home. The first leg is set to be played on March 6 and the second leg on March 13, and Postecoglou will be hoping to have all his key men fit before those clashes.

When is the Europa knockout draw?

The draw to decide the Europa League Round-of-16, quarter-final and semi-final will be held on Friday, February 21 at 12 pm GMT.

You can watch the draw live on TNT Sports in the UK. It will also be streamed live on UEFA’s website and on their official YouTube channel.

With the Red Devils on the opposite side of the draw, it means that Tottenham and Manchester United can only meet in the Europa League final in Bilbao if both sides get that far.
