Gus Poyet makes Ange Postecoglou trophy claim amid Tottenham pressure
Amidst speculation over Ange Postecoglou’s long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur, Gus Poyet explains why the Spurs hierarchy needs to give him the chance to see out the rest of the season at N17.
How close is Ange Postecoglou to being sacked?
Daniel Levy has been a trigger-happy chairman during his time in charge of Tottenham, often making a managerial change whenever a top-four finish has looked in jeopardy.
However, Levy has changed course and decided to keep faith in Postecoglou despite the club’s struggles this season, with reports indicating that the Spurs supremo is sympathetic to the injury situation that the Australian has had to deal with.
Some reports suggested last week that a loss against Man Utd would have seen the club seriously consider a managerial change, but thankfully for the Tottenham boss, his players managed to overcome the Red Devils and return to winning ways.
Gus Poyet urges Tottenham to keep Ange Postecoglou
Poyet admitted that he feels for Postecoglou and the way he has been targeted by the media over the last couple of months.
The former Spurs midfielder and assistant coach urged the Lilywhites hierarchy to give the 59-year-old the chance to live up to his word and deliver a trophy in his second season at the club.
The Uruguayan told Encyclopedia Dramatica: “Ange Postecoglou needs to improve, but I feel for him. I hated it when I was a manager when all of the external pressure is on you, it feels like everyone ignores the 19 other managers!
“I would like to see him finish the season as Spurs manager to give him the chance to win that trophy that he said he would in his second season. If you don’t give him the chance, you’ll never know.
“That said, when Jose Mourinho was as Spurs, they sacked him a week before a final! I think they need to give Ange the chance. If he were to lose a final, then you’ve got a point to sack him, but they need to give him a chance.
“It’s fair to say that things can’t go any worse in the Premier League but if he can get them to stay where they are, then they have to give him the opportunity to do what he said he would. Spurs can’t keep changing managers, they need to have a clear, progressive plan and stick with it.”
Tottenham were always going to give Postecoglou the season
The last thing that the Spurs hierarchy would want is to appoint Ryan Mason as the interim head coach for the third time in five seasons.
Even if the Tottenham top brass are not completely convinced that Postecoglou is the man for the long-term, they will find it difficult to attract any of their top managerial candidates mid-season.
If Spurs fail to progress to the latter stages of the Europa League and finish outside the top six this season, it is difficult to see how Postecoglou will still be in the hot seat at the start of the next campaign.
