Tottenham have sealed direct passage to the knockout rounds

Ange Postecoglou‘s men managed to achieve their objective of finishing in the top eight in the Europa League table, which meant that they sealed direct passage to the Round of 16 stage.

However, 16 different sides are now competing for the chance to join those eight sides in the next round, with Tottenham set to face either the winner of the clash between Galatasaray and AZ Alkmaar, or the one between Real Sociedad and FC Midtjylland.

Spurs came one step closer to finding out their next opponents after the first-leg results on Thursday, with Alkmaar thrashing Galatasaray 4-1 at home while Midtjylland fell to a 2-1 defeat in Denmark to Sociedad.

When will the Europa League round of 16 matches be played?

After having earned the right to go directly into the pre-quarterfinal stage of the Europa League, and being knocked out from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, Ange Postecoglou‘s men can focus just on the Premier League over the next few weeks.

Tottenham will only return to Europa League action at the start of March, with the first leg set to be played on March 6 and the second leg on March 13.

Sandwiched between those two games is a Premier League clash against Bournemouth, with the Cherries visiting the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on March 9.
