European giants are hopeful Tottenham will pay them £50m this summer
Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen reportedly had to intervene to ensure Mathys Tel joined Tottenham in the latter stages of the transfer window, and the Bundesliga club are clear about what they want to happen in the summer.
Tottenham won the Mathys Tel transfer merry-go-round
The Tel transfer saga turned out to be the biggest transfer soap opera of the final days of the January window, with the player being linked with a number of Premier League clubs.
Even though Man Utd appeared to be leading the race going into deadline day, it was Tottenham who managed to push through a deal for the 19-year-old after initially being unable to strike an agreement with the player.
Tottenham have a £50m option to buy Tel permanently in the summer if the forward agrees to a move, and Ange Postecoglou is confident the player will remain at N17 beyond the end of the season.
Bayern CEO intervened to push through Matheus Tel deal
According to a report in SportBILD (as relayed by Sport Witness) Bayern are hoping that Spurs will take up the £50m option so that their coffers will be boosted in the summer.
It is explained that the Bundesliga club are being ‘very careful’ with their finances after offering some big contract extensions to members of their squad.
They need to balance their books and the fee from Tel‘s sale would go a long way towards helping them do that.
In fact, it is asserted that the France Under-21 international initially refused a move to N17, and Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen had to get involved to ensure the deal got over the line.
The outlet adds that Dressen has a good relationship with Daniel Levy as he was the man who negotiated the deal for Harry Kane with the Spurs chairman 18 months ago.
Tel has to be convinced he can fulfil his ambitions at Spurs
It has been widely reported that Tottenham’s obligation to buy would be dependent on Tel giving the green light to the move.
Bayern would be happy to get that fee from anyone and would not object if the teenager decides to move to Chelsea, Man Utd or Arsenal instead.
The forward will have no shortage of suitors in the summer, and he would have to be convinced that he can compete for major honours at Tottenham, which will very much depend on how the club finish the season.
