Tottenham could bring back former player as a free agent this summer
One Tottenham academy graduate could leave his current Premier League club to return to N17 on a free transfer at the end of the season, but Spurs would have to compete with two London rivals for his signature.
Will Tottenham be in the market for a right-back in the summer?
Spurs are well covered for options at right-back, with Pedro Porro, Djed Spence and Archie Gray being used in that role at different times this season.
Ange Postecoglou certainly has more resources to call upon for that role than he does in some other positions on the pitch, such as left-back, where Destiny Udogie is the only natural option.
However, it has emerged that Spurs may seize upon the chance to strengthen at right-back for free in the summer as their former player is set to run out of contract.
Tottenham could look at signing Kyle Walker-Peters
The player in question is Kyle Walker-Peters, who came through the Hotspur Way academy and broke into the Spurs first-team under Mauricio Pochettino.
The right-back was sold to Southampton by Jose Mourinho and has gone on to be an extremely consistent performer at the South Coast.
However, the 27-year-old’s current deal at the St Mary’s runs out at the end of the season and according to talkSPORT, he is seeking a new challenge.
The report claims that the Saints are already resigned to losing Walker-Peters at the end of the season and suggests that a return to N17 is on the cards for the player.
However, Tottenham face some competition for the defender, with Fulham and West Ham United also tracking him ahead of the summer.
Would Walker-Peters be open to returning to Spurs?
There is no doubt that the former Spurs man will be a very good fit for Postecoglou‘s system, given his athleticism, engine and technical quality.
However, he might seek assurances regarding regular game time in order to return to his boyhood club, and Postecoglou might not be in a position to offer him those sorts of assurances, given the options he has at his disposal.
One can also argue that a right-back is not really a priority for Spurs, particularly given the way Spence has come on this season, although the Englishman has been used predominantly as a left-back.
