Tottenham are now closer to finding out Europa League opponents
The first legs of the Europa League knockout playoff fixtures took place on Thursday and some big results have meant that Tottenham are now one step closer to knowing who they might face in the next round.
Tottenham await their Europa League knockout opponents
Spurs were one of eight sides that secured direct qualification to the round of 16 stage of the Europa League after finishing in fourth place in the table.
That has offered Ange Postecoglou‘s men some much-needed rest this week and the next as they wait to find out who they will go up against in the next round.
Spurs resume Europa League action on March 6, with the Lilywhites slated to face one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar, or Midtjylland in the next round.
Tottenham one step closer to finding out who they will face
Alkmaar are locked in a playoff with Galatasaray, while Real Sociedad are currently battling it out with Midtjylland, with Tottenham set to face off against the winner of one of the two ties.
Galatasaray now look unlikely to make it through to the next round after suffering a resounding 4-1 loss to Alkmaar on Thursday ahead of the return leg in Istanbul.
Meanwhile, Real Sociedad are also well-placed to qualify for the next round after emerging with a 2-1 lead over Midtjylland after the first leg in Denmark.
Tottenham will be pleased to see Galatasaray thrashed
If one asked Ange Postecoglou who he would want to avoid out of the four, he might pick Galatasaray, who beat an understrength Spurs side in Turkey during the group stages.
Spurs will thus be pleased to see that the Super Lig club are now on the verge of being knocked out after Thursday’s result.
Sociedad would also be challenging opponents to face so early in the competition, which is why Tottenham will be hoping that Midtjylland are able to cause an upset in Spain next week.
