Tottenham urged to sign striker for £54m this summer to raise their level
Former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel believes that Tottenham Hotspur need to do everything in their power to bring Harry Kane back to the club in the summer and makes an interesting claim about the striker’s release clause.
Harry Kane not expected to leave Bayern Munich despite release clause
Since the news of Kane’s £54m release clause at Bayern, which will become active in the summer, became public, there has understandably been a lot said and written about the possibility of the striker returning to the Premier League in the summer.
However, various sources have suggested over the last few days that Bayern are relaxed about the situation and do not expect the 31-year-old to push for a move.
If the centre-forward does decide to leave the Allianz Arena in the summer, Spurs may be well-paced to sign him since the North London club also have a first refusal on the striker.
Tottenham should pull out all the stops to re-sign Harry Kane
Markus Babel has now claimed that Spurs and Manchester United should both do their utmost to convince Kane to return to the Premier League after the news regarding his release clause.
The pundit identified the England captain’s departure from Tottenham as the main reason why Heung-min Son has struggled to hit his usual heights at N17.
Babel told Wette.de: “If I was Manchester United, I’d be doing everything to sign Harry Kane because of this £54 million release clause. At Manchester United, it’s not acceptable what is currently going on at that club.
“This is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and for how many years now have they been struggling? It shouldn’t be possible. They spend so much money too. Every year they seem to be getting worse and still all while spending much more money than before!
“If I was Manchester United, I would be splashing out on signing Harry Kane because he is a quality player and he will score goals, and if you have a striker up front scoring goals then your chances of winning games are much bigger. If I was Manchester United, I’d do everything possible to sign him.
“If I’m Tottenham, I’d be trying to do everything to bring him back to the club too. Since Harry left Tottenham, they’ve been struggling. They want to fight for the Champions League places, but now they need to make sure that they are not relegated instead!
“Harry is a player that makes other players better. If you see Son Heung-min with Harry Kane, and you see Son now without him, he’s a different player. He was so much better when Harry was at Tottenham.”
Babbel expects Kane to remain at Bayern Munich
However, Babbel does not expect efforts from Premier League clubs to seduce Kane to be successful, suggesting that the forward still has some unfinished business at the Allianz Arena.
The pundit suggested that the 31-year-old must have insisted on adding the release clause as a condition to sign for Bayern 18 months ago, which is why the Bundesliga giants agreed to do so.
Babbel added: “If Bayern didn’t insert this release clause in Harry’s contract, then they wouldn’t have been able to sign him in the first place, so it’s understandable. Harry is one of the best strikers in the world, one of the best number nines in the world, because he is not only a great finisher but he’s smart, he can play football, he’s top class.
“If Bayern wanted to sign him in the first place, then they will have had to accept what Harry Kane wants. If this is part of the deal then OK, give it to him. He performed last season; he’s performing this season.
“If he wants to go back to England at some point because his family is not feeling 100% settled in Munich, then he’ll find a team that’s willing to spend the money on him and take him back to England.
“A couple of big clubs in England are struggling – Manchester United and Tottenham could certainly do with him. He’s always a player that teams will want to sign. You need a striker that scores goals.
!It’s like at Manchester City, if Erling Haaland is not scoring goals, they have a problem. It’s the same with any club. Harry is still performing, he’s scoring so many goals for Bayern, his performances this season have been unbelievable – so hopefully he stays in Munich.”
