Spurs eye move for Colombian midfield destroyer but face one big roadblock
Spurs are plotting a summer move for a South American midfield destroyer whose stock is rising rapidly, but they do face some complications in getting the deal over the line.
Spurs need additions in midfield
Spurs chose to neglect the midfield department in January, strengthening upfront, in defence, and in goal, with the acquisitions of Mathys Tel, Kevin Danson and Antonin Kinsky respectively.
However, given Yves Bissouma’s struggles, and the inconsistency of both Pape Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur this season, one would expect the club to prioritise strengthening in the middle of the park in the summer.
It has now emerged that Tottenham have turned their attention to a Colombian star who is being backed to make a summer switch to Europe.
Spurs are eyeing a move for Richard Rios
The player in question is Richard Rios, who has emerged as one of the best midfielders in Brazilian football since moving to Palmeiras in 2023.
The tough-tackling player has also impressed on the international stage from Colombia, and it is claimed by Fichajes that Tottenham are big fans of the player.
The report states that Ange Postecoglou‘s men view the athletic and technically gifted Palmeiras man as someone who can fix their issues in the middle of the park.
Spurs are not the only ones after Richard Rios, with West Ham United and Nottingham Forest also keen on securing his services.
However, it is pointed out that the midfielder has a €100m (£83.3m) release clause in his contract, which could be a ‘significant obstacle’ to a summer deal.
Richard Rios’s future could be determined very soon
Fichajes say none of the three Premier League clubs interested in Rios are willing to pay his release clause, with the success of the operation thus dependent on Palmeiras’ flexibility in negotiations.
Interestingly, it is suggested that we might not have to wait until the summer to find out the player’s fate as his future ‘could be determined over the coming weeks’.
The outlet explains that the player is keen to make the move to Europe and the ‘pressure from interested clubs’ could ramp up soon.
