Tottenham Hotspur’s great exodus

In the last couple of years, Tottenham Hotspur have been refreshing their squad in a big way. We have seen a lot of new players come in and a fair few deemed “deadwood” moved on.

This exodus started when the club decided to start a new coaching project, hiring manager Ange Postecoglou to be the man to lead the club to greater heights – hopefully.

So far, the current project has had its fair share of setbacks, as the Lilywhites are struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League table, and are out of the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

Japhet Tanganga’s impressive record since leaving Tottenham

While Spurs continue to struggle on the pitch, one of the players that was moved on in 2023, has been thriving. Japhet Tanganga who was shipped away to Millwall initially on loan, has greatly improved the backline of his current employers.

Since Japhet Tanganga left Spurs for Millwall, the defender has not conceded more than two goals in a game. That record spans over a period of two years (TransferMarkt).

The last time the defender conceded two plus goals was actually during his time at Tottenham, when the Lilywhites lost 4-1 to Leicester City on 11 February 2023.

More importantly, the Japhet Tanganga has remained largely injury-free during this time at Millwall despite his reputation for long stints out during his Tottenham days.

Could Tottenham Hotspur do with Japhet Tanganga?

Despite his impressive record at the back, Millwall are far from a Premier League return – they currently sit 14th in the Championship. While many might downplay this stat because of the level Tanganga is playing, the record is still impressive.

In fact, some may argue that if he was still at Spurs, he would be able to help out the team during this current injury crisis. His versatility, strength and new-found injury-free fitness, would have been a real bonus for Postecoglou over the past few months.

Regardless, in terms of raw ability, Tanganga is not better than any of Spurs’ current defensive options and should he have stayed, he would have had to make do with being a backup option.
