Tottenham only have 10 days to make transfer happen this summer
Some interesting details have emerged about Tottenham’s option to buy Johnny Cardoso in the summer, with the Lilywhites reportedly still having work to do if they want to sign the Real Betis man.
Tottenham are well placed to land Johnny Cardoso
If Tottenham do want to sign Cardoso, they can do so for €25m (£21m) at the end of the season, thanks to an option they acquired while striking a deal with Betis for the transfer of Giovani Lo Celso last summer.
The 23-year-old has been making waves in La Liga over the last 18 months, and while he recently extended his contract with Betis, that does not have any impact on Tottenham’s option to buy.
A fresh update from Spain has now offered more context on the clause and explained what Spurs have to do to bring the USA international to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs have a 10-day window to activate clause
The print edition of ABC Sevilla (as relayed by Sport Witness) has now claimed that Tottenham will have to make a decision on Cardoso early in the summer window.
The report says that the clause is only valid from June 30th and will expire on July 10, leaving the North London club just ten days to activate it.
Further, it is explained that while Spurs have agreed the clause with Betis, they are yet to reach an agreement with Cardoso. They would thus have to discuss personal terms with the player’s representatives before activating the option.
The publication asserts that even if Tottenham decide against signing the midfielder, and he moves elsewhere, the Premier League side would still benefit as they would get 20 per cent of the fee that Betis receive.
Will Tottenham make a move for Johnny Cardoso?
There is no doubt that Tottenham need a number six as Yves Bissouma has struggled this season while Rodrigo Bentancur has also not shown any sort of consistency.
That position will be a priority for the club to address in the summer, and they clearly like Cardoso, which is the reason they have obtained the option to buy.
However, one would not be surprised if Johan Lange and the club’s recruitment department decide to pass up on the La Liga star and prioritise other midfielders.
