Donley is thought of by many at Hotspur Way as a potential generational talent, especially after spearheading the Under-21s match to the Premier League 2 title last season.

That is why many people at Spurs would have been left scratching their heads as to why the 20-year-old was struggling for game time at Orient a couple of months ago.

However, the youngster has managed to turn his fortunes around and has been getting better and better with each outing since November, showing exactly why he is rated so highly.

Jamie Donley opens up on Ange Postecoglou conversation

On Saturday, Donley made his mark in what was arguably the biggest game of his career so far as the O’s hosted Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round.

The attacking midfielder scored what was arguably the goal of the season by lobbing the City goalkeeper from just inside Man City’s half.

It was some way for the Tottenham academy graduate to announce himself to the wider English public, with the youngster admitting that he is now keen to go back to Hotspur Way in the summer and do all he can to become a first-team player at his boyhood club.

Speaking after Orient’s 2-1 loss to City, Donley said (via George Sessions): “Ange spoke to me and said when I come back to make sure I am a better player… that is obviously my goal and however I get there or however long it takes me, I’ll keep going.

“If that is another loan next year or see how I do in pre-season, but I want to play for Tottenham.”

Can Donley force himself into Tottenham plans?

We already know that Postecoglou is not shy of handing opportunities to young players if he feels they are good enough.

Donley will thus know that he can force himself into the Australian’s plans if he has a strong finish to the season at Orient and impresses during pre-season back at Spurs.

However, a lot will depend on whether the Australian is still in charge by the end of the season, which looks far from certain at the moment.
