Jamie Donley shines on the big stage

Donley has been one of the best players on show in League One since forcing his way back into Leyton Orient’s starting eleven a little over two months ago.

Over the weekend, the youngster had an opportunity to show what he can do on the big stage as Manchester City travelled to Brisbane Road for the FA Cup fourth-round tie.

The 20-year-old made a huge impact just 16 minutes into the game, lobbing Man City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from just inside City’s half, despite being under pressure.

The goal was ultimately not enough for Orient to complete a historic upset as the Premier League champions scored twice in the second half to seal progression into the fifth round.

Jamie Donley garners praise from Orient boss

While Donley‘s strike against Man City was undoubtedly his best of the season, it officially went down in the record books as an Ortega on goal as the ball struck the crossbar and struck the German goalkeeper on his back before hitting the back of the net.

Orient boss Richie Wellens feels that is unfair to strip the on-loan Tottenham man off that goal, and he predicted that this will not be the last time that Donley goes up against City if he keeps developing like he is at the moment.

Wellens said in his post-match press conference: “Yeah, I just told him, I literally passed him on the stairs, it’s a shame that it’s gone down as an own goal, I don’t think that’s deserved, I don’t think [Stefan] Ortega wants it neither. So, there’s one thing seeing it, it’s another thing executing it. The lad has talent.

“Spurs have been great with us, loaned us one of their best young players and we think we’ve developed him well over the last six months and if he carries on with the same attitude, the same intensity and work ethic and mentality, then he might be playing against them [Manchester City] week in, week out.”

Donley earns praise from Pep Guardiola too

It is not just his own manager that showered praise on Donley, but also the manager in the opposite dugout, Pep Guardiola.

The City boss was left mightily impressed by the 20-year-old’s strike and referred to the attacking midfielder as an “incredible” talent.

Guardiola said after seeing his side edge out the League One side 2-1: “What a goal. Fantastic he shoot, the quality, the technique and the speed, the flight of the ball. When you concede this goal, it is just to congratulate the guy. I think it was Donley. He is an incredible left-foot player.”
