Tottenham are an easy target for jokes and criticism – Ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou believes that Tottenham are easy targets for pundits, with many people in the media enjoying laying the boot into Spurs when they have poor results.
Tottenham ripped apart by pundits after Liverpool defeat
Spurs have been crucified by pundits after their sorry showing at Anfield on Thursday, where they failed to even register a single shot on target and went down 4-0.
Jamie Carragher insisted after the game that the result was never in doubt even before the game, given that Tottenham never show up in big games, and asserted that even Accrington Stanley posed more problems to Liverpool when they played them in the third round of the FA Cup.
Jamie Redknapp asserted that he had never seen a Spurs side go down with less fight than they showed in Merseyside on Thursday.
Ange Postecoglou hits back at Tottenham critics
Postecoglou admitted that Tottenham are an easy target for many in the media, given their trophy record.
When asked about the things that have been said about him and his side over the past few days, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “We’re an easy mark at the moment, there’s inconsistency in our play, everyone is saying I’m making excuses about injuries and it’s kind of easy with the club not having won a trophy in a long time for people to pile on.”
It was then pointed to the 59-year-old that many clubs across the Premier League have not won trophies for a while and yet, they do not attract the type of criticism that Spurs do.
Postecoglou responded: “It is, I don’t know, that’s something for you guys to reflect on more than me, I’ve only been here a short time. It does feel like there’s very much an eagerness to take the club down for one reason or another when the opportunity exists.
“At the moment we’re giving them the opportunity after last night and with our league form but that can’t chart our way forward. That can’t be our motivation to change people’s opinions and people who have formed these opinions over a long time.
“I think that would fall into the trap of me reacting to this stuff (about him as well). It is what it is. After a night like last night whatever comes our way, whether it’s to me or the club, we’ve just got to keep our counsel and understand it’s an easy moment for people to drag you down and deal with it in the best possible way, which is to do your job, focus on the next challenge and find a way to get to where we want to.”
Postecoglou feels Tottenham’s injury situation deserves more attention
Tottenham’s injury list has been in the double digits for months, which is not a point that appears to have been addressed by the likes of Carragher and Redknapp while criticising the side.
Postecoglou has repeatedly been pointing to the bloated injury list as the reason for the team’s struggles, but his complaints seem to be falling on deaf ears.
When asked if people are no longer buying into the narrative that injuries are having a big effect on the side’s performances, the Tottenham head coach responded: “I don’t know how it’s a narrative when you are just stating facts.
“If people don’t see a situation where you are missing something significant there is nothing I can say to that. If they say ‘well, that shouldn’t really make a difference’ I don’t know how to answer that.
“I get that people’s senses get dulled or people get bored – everyone wants a bit of drama, but that’s not drama, that’s just stating facts. We have been missing some really key players for a long time and have had to deal with that.”
