Pundit hints Tottenham should replace Heung-min Son as captain

Jamie Redknapp has just delivered a brutal verdict on Heung-min Son’s leadership qualities and the attitude of the senior players in the Tottenham side after they were embarrassed by Liverpool on Thursday.

Spurs fail to throw a punch in a season-defining game

Tottenham’s sorry display at Anfield was, in many ways, a microcosm of all that has gone wrong at the club this season.

The Lilywhites went in with a severely understrength side, which was as much down to bad luck as it was down to pure management of injuries.

The away side even failed to lay a glove on Liverpool, and they looked completely lost for most of the game, with Ange Postecoglou watching on passively from the sidelines, handicapped by the fact that he did not have too many effective options to turn to on the bench.

Jamie Redknapp’s brutal verdict of Heung-min Son and Tottenham

Redknapp has pointed to the lack of leaders within the Tottenham side as a big issue and questioned Son‘s credentials as a captain.

The pundit said on Sky Sports about the South Korean: “I just don’t see him as a captain.”

The former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder took aim at the senior players in the Tottenham squad and suggested that they failed to show up on the night.

Redknapp added: “I can’t remember in my lifetime a team go down with less of a fight than Tottenham did today. Not having any shot on target in a semi-final second leg when trying to change the course of your history.

“I felt sorry for their young players. Djed Spence played 14 different positions tonight. I’ve never seen anything like it. The experienced players need to make sure they set the right tempo. They didn’t do that one bit. There’s been some lows but that today, looking at that scoreline, is just horrendous.”

Some of Tottenham’s senior men were exposed

There is no doubt that Tottenham’s senior players failed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and impose themselves on the contest.

Spurs desperately needed the likes of Son, Bentancur and Bissouma to step up and take over the leadership mantle in the absence of the likes of Romero, Vicario and Maddison, and it simply did not happen.

With Bissouma, it is a clear pattern now, with the midfielder tending to always crumble under the pressure of big matches, particularly away from home.
