Tottenham’s record in the FA Cup 4th Round is a bad omen for Postecoglou

Tottenham complete another domestic cup doubleheader with a trip to Aston Villa for the 4th round of the FA Cup. While Spurs often progress beyond this stage, their results against Premier League opponents at this stage leave much to be desired.

Tottenham’s last ten FA Cup 4th round fixtures

Over the last decade of fixtures in the FA Cup, Tottenham have only failed to get beyond the fourth round on three occasions.

Most recently this occurred last season as Spurs lost 0-1 to Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The other two fourth-round losses came against Crystal Palace in 2019 and Leicester in 2015.

Victories against Newport County and Southampton in 2018 and 2020 respectively, required a fourth-round replay. However, FA Cup fixtures now go to extra time and penalties instead.

Tottenham’s 4th round results
Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City
Preston North End 0-3 Tottenham
Tottenham 3-1 Brighton
Wycombe Wanderers 1-4 Tottenham
Tottenham 3-2 Southampton (replay)
Tottenham 0-2 Crystal Palace
Tottenham 2-0 Newport County
Tottenham 4-3 Wycombe Wanderers
Colchester United 1-4 Tottenham
Tottenham 1-2 Leicester

Spurs struggle against PL opposition in the 4th round

Tottenham frequently progress beyond the 4th round of the FA Cup. However, they have usually made it to the latter stages when receiving favourable fixture draws.

In 2020 and 2022, Spurs beat Southampton and Brighton as Premier League opponents. To find the next instance where Tottenham knocked out Premier League opposition in the fourth round, you need to go back to 2005 against West Brom.

In the 19 seasons since 2005, Spurs have been knocked out in the third round twice and knocked out in the fourth round 7 times, with only one of those games being against non-Premier League opposition.

Can Postecoglou surpass a Redknapp benchmark?

Historically, the FA Cup is one of Tottenham’s favoured competitions. However, they have failed to get beyond the fifth round every year since 2018.

Spurs have not been this low in the Premier League table, at the time of the FA Cup 4th round, since 2009. Harry Redknapp took over from Juande Ramos bringing Spurs back up to an 8th-place finish while going out of the FA Cup in the 4th round and losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester United.

Ange Postecoglou will be hoping he can mount a league recovery and take Spurs to success in their domestic cup campaigns as well as in the Europa League. If he can, Postecoglou could redefine one of Spurs’ worst league campaigns in decades to a year of unique success for the club.
