Tottenham Hotspur’s poor performance against Liverpool

If you are a Tottenham fan and you watched the game against Liverpool, you perhaps were wondering whether the club showed up to play a semi-final match.

The performance was nothing but poor from kick-off down to the full-time whistle, Spurs looked shocking.

Errors, lack of grit and determination, fear and an inability to handle pressure was the story of the night. When you come into a semi-final clash without any hunger or desire to win against a relentless Liverpool side, then disaster is what you are asking for.

Ange Postecoglou defends his Tottenham players

After such an abysmal performance from the Lilywhites, questions are going to be asked and criticism is going to follow. That has been the case, as manager Ange Postecoglou has received his fair share alongside club captain Heung-min Son.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Tottenham manager has defended his players’ performance and has promised an improvement in their next Cup game against Aston Villa.

He said: “I get the pile on at the moment, it’s really easy for people to stick their boots in and question the players but I don’t question.

“We were disappointed last night didn’t go the way we wanted and we didn’t perform at the levels – but that doesn’t define this group of players in my eyes.

“We’ll go out there on Sunday and put out more of a performance that reflects where we’re at. I have a great deal of belief in these players and what they’re going through and how they’re dealing with it.”

Can we expect an improvement from Spurs?

While the manager is optimistic about a performance improvement, I doubt much will change aside from maybe not getting thrashed 4-0.

The problem I believe lies in the injury crisis the club is facing. Using the same eleven players every week is simply not sustainable and that has been clear to see throughout Tottenham’s campaign.

I mean just watching the game against Liverpool, you look at their bench and you see the manager bringing on Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliot and Diogo Jota.

Then you look at the Spurs bench and you are thinking wow who do we bring on here? This situation will not change this weekend as we head to Villa Park, to face a Villa side that has had seven days of rest and has strengthened their attacking depth in the just concluded winter window.

Until we see our first-team players return to full fitness, I expect more inconsistent performances from this group of players.
