Jamie Carragher says three Spurs players ‘were a disgrace’ vs Liverpool
Jamie Carragher was appalled with what he saw from three Spurs players at Anfield as the Lilywhites were steamrolled by Arne Slot’s men in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
An understrength Spurs were swotted away by Liverpool
While it is tempting to describe Tottenham’s performance at Anfield on Thursday as their poorest of the season so far, the reality is that there is huge competition for that title. The Lilywhites have turned out some shocking displays over the last few months.
However, given the magnitude of Thursday’s game and the context of what it means to Spurs’ season, one would have expected the away side to at least show some fight.
Instead, they were brushed aside with consummate ease by a Liverpool side, who did not have to get out of second gear to put four past Tottenham.
Jamie Carragher points finger at Tottenham trio
From back to front, there were a number of poor displays across the Spurs side, with barely one or two players managing to come out of the game with any credit.
Ange Postecoglou surprised many by deciding to select a defensive-minded midfield trio of Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr, and predictably, they offered little to nothing going forward as the away side struggled to progress the ball up the pitch.
Speaking about the trio, Carragher told Sky Sports (06/02/25): “When I look at those three Tottenham midfield players, I thought they were a disgrace no matter who the manager is.”
Ange Postecoglou’s failed to walk the walk
For the past 18 months, all we have been hearing from Postecoglou is that he will never change his attacking approach, not even if the odds are stacked against his side.
And yet, in what is arguably the biggest game of his tenure at Tottenham so far, he went for a safety-first approach in the middle of the park and decided to leave Lucas Bergvall out of the side.
The first-half performance by Spurs was not too dissimilar to a Jose Mourinho away display. While some will give credit to Postecoglou for showing that he can be adaptable, it belies the main message that he has been sending so far.
It seems like the 59-year-old is starting to abandon some of his principles to save his job, something he has repeatedly stressed that he would never do under any circumstances.
