What can Tottenham expect from Mathys Tel? Bundesliga expert reveals all
After his deadline-day move from Bayern Munich to Tottenham, Mathys Tel has been the talk of the town. Now, a Bundesliga expert tells Spurs fans what they can expect from their new forward.
Tottenham’s surprising coup of Mathys Tel
Deadline day always brings surprises, but few would have predicted that Tottenham Hotspur would land a player of Mathys Tel’s calibre at the eleventh hour.
Tel was not initially expected to make the switch to Spurs. Just days before deadline day, reports suggested that the French forward had rejected a permanent move to N17.
It seemed the youngster preferred to remain in Germany and fight for his place at Bayern. However, things changed rapidly, and Tottenham’s manager Ange Postecoglou played a pivotal role in convincing the talented teenager to try his luck in the Premier League.
The loan deal, which includes an option to buy, provides both parties with flexibility. For Tottenham, it is a chance to evaluate Tel’s impact without immediate long-term commitment, while for Tel, it is an opportunity to prove himself in a new environment under a manager known for developing young talent.
What Tottenham can expect from Mathys Tel
Bundesliga expert Kevin Hatchard offered valuable insight into what Tottenham fans can expect from Tel during an appearance on talkSPORT, highlighting both the player’s strengths and the areas where he still needs to grow.
Hatchard acknowledged Tel’s versatility and potential but emphasised that the 19-year-old remains a work in progress.
He said: “So the first thing to say is that Mathys Tel is an exciting player, there’s no doubt about that. I mean this is Bayern’s youngest ever scorer and when he came to the club he made an impact straight away.
“He is somebody that is quite versatile, he can play as an inside forward off the left, or he can play as a centre-forward.
“He’s quick, he’s tricky, he is a decent finisher, he’s good in the air – the thing about him is that there are a lot of rough edges to his game that need smoothing off but he can only do that with game time.
“Now he’s actually had decent game time in the two previous seasons, but since Vincent Kompany went to Bayern, he just hasn’t really had much of a look in.
“I think part of that is because he’s not a winger who likes to hug the touchline necessarily, in the way that a Kingsley Coman would, or Leroy Sane can do on that right-hand side.
“It’s quite interesting though because Bayern at the start of the window were quite relaxed about this, they were quite happy for him to stay and fight for his place, and the feeling was that he wanted to do that too.
“But since the turn of the year, he just hasn’t had that game time, and I think that’s convinced him to try his hand elsewhere.”
When will Tel make his Spurs debut?
Spurs fans will be eager to see their new signing in action as soon as possible, and Thursday’s clash against Liverpool could offer the perfect opportunity for Tel to make his debut.
Manager Ange Postecoglou has already confirmed that the young forward is available for selection. He said: “For availability from last week, everyone fine. Kevin and Mathys are both available and have trained.”
This has raised hopes that Tel could feature in the match against Liverpool, giving Tottenham supporters their first glimpse of the exciting teenager in action.
