Richie Wellens’ apology and his attempt to make amends

It all began when Leyton Orient suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Stockport County. Following the match, their manager was asked if injuries had played a role in his side’s loss.

His response sparked controversy: “I am not going to make excuses, I am not Ange Postecoglou,” he said.

Given Tottenham’s well-documented injury crisis this season, which has left them without up to eleven first-team players ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, Wellens’ comment struck a nerve with many.

The Leyton Orient boss soon realised the gravity of his words and quickly issued a statement apologising for what he described as “stupid” and “deeply embarrassing” remarks.

To make amends, he has attempted to reach out to Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou directly, but things did not go as planned.

‘I made a mistake, I have apologised’ – Wellens’ sincere efforts to move on

In a recent interview, Wellens detailed his efforts to contact Postecoglou, hoping to apologise directly. He said as relayed by the Daily Mail, “I have not. I have tried to. But they had an important game.

“It was Saturday night, I tried to call someone at Spurs, but they had an important game (against Brentford) on the Sunday. They won, which I was pleased about.

“I have obviously apologised, and I think that is the matter closed now. He has got a job to do which is a lot more important. I made a mistake, I have apologised for it. Tottenham is a brilliant football club, and I hope they keep him.

“Jamie and Josh have been absolutely fantastic for this football club, and we hope we can keep this relationship going. I want Tottenham to do well. They are on our doorstep, and we want to keep that relationship. I made a mistake, and we move on.”

Ange Postecoglou has bigger concerns than sideline drama

While Wellens’ comments may have drawn attention, Ange Postecoglou is unlikely to be fazed by them. Tottenham’s injury struggles and a season that has been far from smooth demand his full focus.

With a Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool on the horizon and silverware still within reach, Postecoglou cannot afford to be distracted by external noise.

Winning a trophy would not only bring relief but also silence any lingering doubts or digs from elsewhere. After all, success on the pitch is the best response – and Tottenham still has every chance to make this season a memorable one for the right reasons.
