Tottenham are well placed to land Johnny Cardoso

With Cardoso staying put at Betis during the January window, Spurs are at the front of the queue to win the race for the midfielder in the summer. The Premier League side has a €25m (£21m) option to buy Cardoso, which becomes active at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen whether Ange Postecoglou and Co take up that option, but one would think that there will be no shortage of interest in the USA international regardless.

However, there was an update earlier this week from Betis which potentially threatened to throw a spanner in the works of Tottenham’s plans to sign the 24-year-old.

Johnny Cardoso’s contract extension and its impact on Tottenham

The La Liga club announced earlier this week that they had activated a one-year extension option in Cardoso’s contract, which means that the American’s deal at the Benito Villamarin Stadium now runs until 2030.

However, Mundo Deportivo have now clarified that his new contract extension has no impact on Spurs‘ option to buy.

The outlet says that the North London club would still be able to secure the Betis man for a fee of £21m in June if they wish to do so.

According to reports over the last few days, it is a clause that Ange Postecoglou’s men are indeed planning on triggering in the summer as they look to revamp their midfield.

Tottenham need a number six in the summer

There is no doubt that Spurs will be in the market for a number six in the summer as Yves Bissouma has not covered himself in glory this season.

Whether Cardoso is the man they will go for remains to be seen and it turns out that the decision could depend on whether Postecoglou is still in the job.

This claim was made by AS, who asserted last week that Postecoglou is a big fan of Cardoso and was the main driving force behind Tottenham’s interest in the midfielder.
