Chelsea tried to repeat Willian hijack on Tottenham again this week

Tottenham will be delighted to have won the race for Mathys Tel, which certainly had more than its fair share of twists and turns. Fresh reports have now explained how Chelsea attempted a sensational hijack of the transfer in the final hours of the transfer window.

Tottenham have been burned by Chelsea in the past

Tottenham fans will be well aware of the fact that the club have been embarrassed by their London rivals on a few occasions in the transfer window, with the Willian one being the most famous instance.

The Brazilian had agreed on a deal with Spurs and had even completed a medical at Hotspur Way back in 2013 before the Blues stole the player from under the North London side’s noses in the final hours of the window.

It turns out that Chelsea tried to repeat the trick with the Tel deal late on Monday, but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Chelsea tried to hijack a late deal for Mathys Tel

Tel has joined Spurs on loan until the end of the season, and much to the delight of the Tottenham fans, Daniel Levy was also able to secure an option to buy for £45.7m in the dying stages of the window.

It has now been revealed by L’Equipe that Chelsea attempted to hijack the deal in the final hours of the window when the Frenchman was already on his way to London.

It is explained that when the 19-year-old was waiting to fly to England to sign for the Lilywhites, Enzo Maresca’s men threatened to nip in and thwart Tottenham’s transfer plans.

However, the report states that Chelsea’s approach came too late as Tel had already decided on a move to Spurs by that point.

Daniel Levy got away with a massive gamble

Had the Tel deal not worked out in the final hours of the window for one reason or another, Daniel Levy would have been left embarrassed as there likely would not have been enough time for the club to secure an alternative.

Tottenham thus took a major gamble by leaving things so late and they were, as Ange Postecoglou remarked around 10 days ago, “playing with fire” by doing so.
