Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs future is not guaranteed

Tottenham have finally managed to find some form in the past week. A 3-0 win against Elfsborg in the Europa League was followed by a 2-0 win at Brentford. The bigger picture, however, is still rather bleak.

Spurs sit 14th in the Premier League Table and at this point in the season, qualifying for Europe through the Premier League is unlikely. Securing the club’s first piece of silverware since 2008 might be what is required of Ange Postecoglou if he is to remain in charge of Tottenham next season.

A number of managers have been linked with the Spurs job, should it become available, including Andoni Iraola, Thomas Frank and Edin Terzic. Other head coaches such as Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna have also been rumoured to be on the club’s radar.

With so many managers reportedly being considered by Spurs, it is fair to say that Postecoglou should not be sitting too comfortably in his current role.

Djed Spence backs Tottenham manager Postecoglou

While Spurs may be lining up options in case they decide to sack Postecoglou, the Australian has received support from his players, including Djed Spence.

Spence did not appear to have a good relationship with Postecoglou initially. However, the 24-year-old has played his part for Spurs, covering as a left-back since Destiny Udogie suffered a hamstring injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of December. Spence was even named player of the match in Tottenham’s most recent match against Brentford.

Speaking to The Standard after that victory, Spence was full of praise for Postecoglou and he insisted his teammates wanted to fight for their manager.

He said: “We’re buzzing. I’m happy to get the three points and time to look forward.

“Nothing specific [was said in the post-match huddle by the away supporters], just that we gotta keep the fight, we gotta keep the momentum and keep going. That’s just what we did and is what we need to do more often.

“It’s been difficult but we fight for the manager, we fight for the club and you know, we all believe in what he wants to do. We’re over the moon with the three points and hopefully, we can just kick on from here.

“We’ve got a lot of players to come back, a lot of key players, great players. Once they come back it gives us the strength to kick on in the season.”

This comes after Dejan Kulusevski also threw his support behind Ange Postecoglou last week.

Ange Postecoglou faces a crucial few days at Spurs

With success in domestic cup competitions looking very important to Postecoglou keeping his job, the next few days are huge for the Spurs boss. His side take on Liverpool on Thursday in the Carabao Cup, before travelling to Aston Villa on Sunday for an FA Cup fourth-round showdown.

If Spurs were to be knocked out of both these competitions, the Europa League would be their only chance to win a trophy. Although they comfortably made it past the league stage, they would be required to win three knockout rounds before the final.

Postecoglou has a tough task, but if he can see out a draw at Anfield and get Spurs into their first cup final in four years, there is every chance he will seal a trophy, which would surely make his job secure.
