Johan Lange reveals why Tottenham are so excited about Mathys Tel

Johan Lange has spoken about the qualities that will make Mathys Tel a real weapon for Tottenham, revealing that everyone at the club cannot wait to see what the Frenchman can do when offered the freedom to express himself.

Tottenham managed to pull a huge surprise out of the hat by striking a deal for Mathys Tel on transfer deadline day after the deal looked completely dead just a couple of days prior.

The fact that the Lilywhites managed to secure an option to buy the 19-year-old in the final hours of the window made it an extremely impressive deal, one that Spurs reportedly had to work hard for to win ahead of their Premier League rivals.

The first order of business for the 19-year-old is to try and fire Tottenham to the final of the Carabao Cup as he looks set to make his blow at Anfield in the second leg of the semifinal.

Johan Lange admits everyone is excited about Tel

Young players who come from abroad usually tend to take time to get adjusted to the demands of Premier League football, but Johan Lange pointed out that Tel is vastly experienced at the highest level for a player his age.

The Tottenham technical director admitted that everyone at Hotspur Way is eager to see the kind of damage that the Frenchman can do when he is “set free”.

When asked about the signing of Tel, Lange told the club’s official channel: “Yeah Mathys is a fantastic talent. He’s in a very unique group of players who at a young age has already played a lot of football at a very high level. I think he has played around 60 games in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich.

“In the Champions League. He played 15 or 16 times for Bayern already in the age of 19. He’s a versatile attacking player who has the X factor that hopefully will bring excitement to the stadium as well and he is a player that that all of us, you know, can’t wait to almost set free within our club, and hopefully we will share many fantastic experiences together in the future.”

Has Lange sent a big hint about Tel’s usage?

Lange‘s comments about wanting to set Tel free suggests that Tottenham believe that his usage at Bayern has not been ideal, and that the youngster has not played in the right positions.

Lange, Postecoglou and the decision-makers at Spurs might believe that the teenager would be able to showcase his best if he is given the freedom to roam around the frontline and interchange positions.

We might thus see the forward play a lot through the middle over the next few months rather than on either flank.
