Djed Spence backs himself to silence Salah and earn England call-up
Djed Spence has stated he is full of confidence ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool, while he has also revealed his future ambitions.
Djed Spence has benefitted from Tottenham’s injury nightmare
Tottenham have had a rough season with injuries. Currently 14th in the Premier League Table their depleted first-team squad is a key reason for their failings. Although this is an issue for the club as a whole, some individuals have benefitted from the trying situation.
Djed Spence is one such player. While his future at Spurs has often been called into question, he appears to have finally earned Ange Postecoglou’s trust thanks to his strong performances.
The reason he has been able to play, though, is not because Postecoglou believed he deserved a chance, but due to Destiny Udogie being sidelined by a hamstring injury.
Spence has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season. He has taken advantage of these opportunities, registering a goal and two assists and contributing well in defence. Despite usually playing on the right side of the pitch, the Englishman has adapted well as a left-back.
Djed Spence has backed himself to suppress Mohamed Salah when Spurs face Liverpool
Tottenham take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg in their next match. They will have some confidence after an impressive 1-0 win in the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but no one is as confident as Spence.
Speaking to The Standard, the 24-year-old has made it clear he does not fear his upcoming opponents, including Liverpool’s main attacking threat Mohamed Salah.
He said: “I back myself against any winger, Salah or whoever. I back myself against anyone.
“[Salah] is a great player, a top player. He’s in good form also. You’ve just got to nullify what he’s good at it, really. He’s good at a lot of things, I just gotta stay focused on it and hopefully come out on top.
“We’re always ready. We’ve got to be confident and we gotta be ready to fight. And hopefully, we make it to the final. I take confidence from every game, every game I’m gonna feel more confident and hopefully get better.”
Djed Spence hopes his Spurs performances will warrant an England call-up
Spence has accomplished his goal of playing regularly for Spurs and he is now chasing his next ambition. While he has a Jamaican father, the London-born defender has revealed he wants to represent the English national team.
He said: “I definitely want to play for England, that’s definitely one of my goals. I definitely want to be called up, so it’s a goal that I want to achieve. We’ll have to see.
“But I’m definitely proud of my [Jamaican] heritage. My family are from St Mary’s.”
If Spence is able to remain a regular starter for Spurs, there is every chance he will achieve his dream of playing for his country. His performances this season have certainly made him worthy to at least be considered by Thomas Tuchel.
