Marcus Edwards returns to English football

Tottenham academy graduate, Marcus Edwards, has completed a return to England, seven years on from leaving the North London side to head to Portugal.

The 26-year-old completed a loan move from Sporting Lisbon to Burnley on deadline day and will link up with Scott Parker, who he previously worked with at the Spurs academy.

The details of the winger’s switch to Turf Moor has now come to light and Daniel Levy will be pleased to learn that Tottenham are in line to get a small financial boost from the winger’s transfer.

Tottenham could claim £3.5m for Marcus Edwards

A report in The Daily Mail has now revealed that Burnley have paid an initial loan fee of £800,000 to sign Edwards and have an obligation to sign the wide-man permanently from Sporting for £10m in the summer.

The outlet claims that the Clarets saw off late competition from Championship rivals, Sunderland, to secure the former Tottenham man.

It is well-documented that Spurs have a 35 per cent sell-on clause on Edwards, which means that when Burnley spend £10m on the diminutive left-footer, the Lilywhites will receive £3.5m of that fee.

Tottenham seem guaranteed to claim a fee

Burnley might have to win promotion back to the Premier League to tempt Edwards to actually stay at Turf Moor. Parker’s men currently sit third in the Championship table on 58 points, just three points behind an automatic promotion spot.

However, unless there is a clause in the deal that negates the obligation if they remain in the Championship, Burnley will have to part ways with £10m to sign Edwards no matter what.

The winger will also know that if he impresses over the next four months in the second tier, a few Premier League sides could try to sign him in the summer.
