Tottenham will pay higher fee for Mathys Tel than first reported
According to the latest update from Germany, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to pay a much higher price for Mathys Tel than some of the reports over the last 24 hours suggested, with the Lilywhites agreeing a huge loan fee and an eye-watering option to buy.
How Tottenham turned the Mathys Tel saga around
It was revealed by Florian Plettenberg on transfer deadline day that Spurs pioneered a major turnaround late in the transfer window after Tel had previously said no to them a few days prior.
The journalist explained that the Lilywhites re-started negotiations during deadline day and were able to see off competition from Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea to land the player.
It was reported by David Ornstein on Monday that Spurs had agreed on an option to buy the 19-year-old for £45.7m in the summer, but this information has now been contradicted by sources in Germany.
The mammoth fee Spurs have agreed for Mathys Tel
Sport Bild reporter Christian Falk has now claimed that the figures reported by the British press are not entirely accurate.
Falk suggests that Spurs have shelled out an initial loan fee of €10m (£8.3m) to bring Tel to N17, which is a huge amount for just a four-month spell.
The journalist suggested that Postecoglou‘s men have agreed to cover the forward’s full salary until the end of the season.
Additionally, he asserts that they would have to pay another €60m (£50m) to sign Tel permanently in the summer, which means that the total fee could come to a whopping €70m (£58.2m) if they take up the option.
A steep fee for a relatively unproven talent
Paying nearly £60m for a teenager who is yet to consistently prove himself at the highest level is undoubtedly a major gamble from Tottenham.
However, it shows just how highly the Spurs recruitment department and Ange Postecoglou rate the Frenchman, with the senior figures seemingly convinced that he is on his way to becoming an elite player.
The risk is also minimised by the nature of the agreement, with Spurs having the chance to pull out of a permanent deal if the teenager does not impress at Hotspur Way over the next four months.
