Mathys Tel rejected Arsenal and Chelsea offers in favour of deadline day Spurs move

0

According to reports from Germany, Mathys Tel rejected a number of offers from Tottenham’s Premier League rivals in the final days of the transfer window before saying yes to the Lilywhites.

Transfer window set to end with a bang for Spurs

Out of nowhere, Spurs appear to have pulled off a massive coup on deadline day, with Mathys Tel reportedly on his way to London to complete a loan move to Tottenham from Bayern Munich.

The player has had a change of heart since rejecting the Lilywhites a couple of days ago, with some sources indicating that Ange Postecoglou’s conversation with the 19-year-old was crucial in changing his mind.

Florian Plettenberg has now provided a comprehensive update on what led to the winger changing his mind about a switch to N17, and how the situation played out in the final few days of the window.

Florian Plettenberg why Tel has decided to join Spurs

Plettenberg has said in an interview with Sky Sports News that the transfer was as ‘massive turnaround’ after Daniel Levy was informed by Tel just a few days ago that a move to Tottenham was “not the right step for him.”

He said: “Mathys Tel is not a winger, he is a striker! He is joining Tottenham to get game time. Two or three days ago he told Daniel Levy that Tottenham was not the right step for him and he didn’t feel the project.

“He then had negotiations with Man Utd, and then decided to join Spurs. He reconsidered after Tottenham presented the deal that he could get game time.”

Following that development, Man Utd entered talks over a loan deal for Tel and were negotiating until Sunday night before calling off the talks.

Then on deadline day, Plettenberg reveals that Tottenham started negotiations again, with the North London club managing to agree a straight loan deal with the teenager on this ocassion.

The Sky Germany reporter explains that Chelsea and Arsenal also made late moves for Tel, but he rejected those clubs and ‘reconsidered’ his decision to join Spurs.

The journalist asserted that the Frenchman felt Postecoglou’s side presented the best project for him to get regular game time under his belt over the coming months.

Plettenberg’s warning to Postecoglou and Spurs

Tel’s arrival significantly bolsters Ange Postecoglou‘s options up front, with the on-loan Bayern man capable of playing across the front three.

However, Plettenberg urged the Tottenham head coach not to use Tel as a winger, insisting that the 19-year-old is at his best when he is leading the line.

The journalist said in the last part of the interview: “Now it is up to Postecoglou to put him in the right position. He is not a winger. Tottenham, please, he is not a winger. He is a striker. Let him score goals.”
