Tottenham were hopeful Crystal Palace would take £32m player off their hands before window closed

0

Tottenham were hoping to offload one defender before Monday’s 11pm transfer deadline, but their plans have now been foiled by Chelsea, who are now on the verge of reaching a transfer agreement with a fellow Premier League side.

Spurs full-back is surplus to requirements

It has been clear right from the day that Ange Postecoglou walked through the door at Hotspur Way 18 months ago that Sergio Reguilon is not in his plans.

The Spaniard was shipped off on loan to Manchester United and Brentford last season, and he has only had any game time at all this season due to the unprecedented injury crisis that Tottenham have been facing over the last two months.

It has now emerged that Spurs were hoping for a deadline-day sale of Reguilon, but their plans have now been thwarted by their London rivals.

Tottenham’s hopes of selling Sergio Reguilon dashed

TBR Football say that Spurs had hoped that Crystal Palace would take Reguilon off their hands before the window slammed shut.

However, the Eagles have now reportedly reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign out-of-favour Ben Chilwell on loan, with the England international thought to be on the verge of completing a temporary switch to Selhurst Park (BBC).

This means that Oliver Glasner’s side no longer need a left-back, with Tottenham’s hopes of getting Reguilon’s salary off their wage bill being dashed as a result.

It remains to be seen if the Lilywhites can find another club willing to take the Real Madrid academy graduate off their hands in the final hours of the transfer window.

Reguilon has flopped following his £32m move to Tottenham in September 2020 with only the club’s injury crisis this season having allowed him a glimpse of game time.

Can Spurs afford to let Reguilon leave amid injury crisis?

Tottenham are now done to the bare bones at left-back, with Destiny Udogie currently sideined through injury.

With Spurs looking unlikely to bring another left-back through the door before the 11 pm deadline, it looks like Djed Spence has to continue playing every game over the coming weeks until the Italian returns.

I would have thought that Postecoglou would want to hold onto Reguilon as a precaution, but it appears that the Australian would be open to the Spaniard departing sooner rather than later.
