With just hours remaining before the transfer window slams shut, Tottenham Hotspur have were said to have made a late push to strengthen their defence by submitting an offer for Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve.

Tottenham’s frantic search for defensive reinforcements

Deadline day drama has been in full swing for Tottenham Hotspur. Just today, fans have experienced a roller coaster of emotions, beginning with Mathys Tel—a player initially reluctant to join the club—now just hours away from becoming an official Spurs player.

The North London club have shown no lack of ambition in the market, evidenced by their staggering £70 million bid for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, which was swiftly rejected.

Meanwhile, despite Chelsea and Spurs reaching an agreement for the loan move of Disasi, talks with the player over a potential deal have yet to yield a breakthrough.

Tottenham were reported to have bid £20m for Maxime Esteve

With less than four hours left before the window shuts, Tottenham’s hunt for a centre-back continues. The report came from Loïc Tanzi a journalist for French news outlet L’Equipe who reportined that Spurs had made a £20 million offer for Burnley’s Maxime Esteve, however, it Burnley were said to be looking for £30 million.

With the news starting to circulate, well-connected Burnley journalist Matt Scrafton poured cold water on the rumour.

Scrafton, who writes for the Burnley Express took to X to confirm: “I’m told there’s no truth to the reports suggesting Tottenham have bid for Maxime Esteve.”

Esteve is a 22-year-old, 6-foot-3 French centre-back who has made 30 appearances for Burnley this season, establishing himself as a key part of their backline.

Tottenham suffered another injury blow when Radu Dragusin was confirmed to have suffered an ACL injury which will all but end his campaign.

Journalist debunks news of Tottenham’s bid for Maxime Esteve

If Tottenham were willing to pay £70 million for Marc Guehi, then it is reasonable to assume that there would have been enough financial flexibility to complete the Esteve deal.

While the Burnley defender is not at Guehi’s level, he represents a younger option with room for development, making him a potentially shrewd investment for the future.

The need for defensive reinforcements has been evident throughout the season, and securing a promising centre-back before the window closes could prove crucial for the club’s ambitions in the latter half of the campaign.
