Has Ange Postecoglou been backed by Spurs? The man himself answers
Ange Postecoglou provides an interesting response when asked if he feels he has been backed sufficiently by the Spurs board during the current transfer window.
Tottenham’s transfer inactivity has proven costly
Coming into the January window, Postecoglou would have hoped for the club to bring some new faces through early in the window to help alleviate the ongoing injury crisis in N17.
However, the Tottenham head coach has not got the help he would have wanted, with the club yet to sign a single outfield player this month.
This has meant that the Australian has had to navigate most of this month with no more than around 12 or 13 fit players, and the results have been very predictable, with the Lilywhites having lost all four of their Premier League games in January.
Ange Postecoglou asked if he feels backed by Spurs
Postecoglou is a man who tends to toe the company line, but even he was forced to admit last week that the club were “playing with fire” by leaving things so late in the window.
However, the 59-year-old has now given a more diplomatic assessment of the situation, claiming that everyone working at Hotspur Way wants him to succeed and insisting that he feels supported by the top brass.
When asked if feels he has had the backing of the board this month, Postecoglou responded (via Football.London): “Everyone is trying their utmost. I don’t think anyone is working against me.
“I don’t think anyone wants me to fail. I think everyone genuinely at the football club… this kind of situation is a tough gig for a manager. You can be very isolated, you can be very vulnerable. I don’t feel that.
“The people I work with are doing their utmost to try and help me guide us through this. I don’t feel like anyone is blocking that. From my perspective, my focus is firmly on the things I can control which is making sure I prepare a team for a really big game tomorrow.”
Are Tottenham hesitating to back Postecoglou for obvious reasons?
Cynics might suggest that the club’s hierarchy do not want to back Postecoglou with any expensive signings as they are not sure how long he will be at the club.
From Postecoglou’s above assertion, it seems like he does not believe that is the case and is genuinely convinced that Daniel Levy, Johan Lange and co are working hard to bring the right players through the door.
We will know within the next four or five days whether the Tottenham head coach is right, or if the club’s top brass have once again left another manager out to dry.
