Tottenham suffer their 13th league loss

With so many absentees, anyone who has been watching Tottenham was aware that finding a way to win against Leicester was easier said than done.

Despite their devastated squad depth, Richarlison managed to grab a 1-0 lead for Spurs after an excellent cross by Pedro Porro. This made the second-half capitulation all the more frustrating.

Sloppiness in possession and an inability to press effectively led to a lacklustre display overall. While many would point to Tottenham’s lack of fit players and general fatigue affecting everyone in the squad, the players appear unwilling to allow a victim mentality to spread.

Despite there being many mitigating factors, Heung-min Son remains an emblem of accountability for Tottenham.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day about Spurs’ loss, Son said: “It is very painful. What can I say? Especially when you’re winning at half-time and conceding two goals in a short period of time. It let us down and is a very frustrating afternoon.

“We can’t just say tiredness because we just came out of the second half. Maybe it was a little bit sloppy, it is not individual mistakes, generally everything is just combining together. It is just a lack of concentration and a bit of sloppiness and in the Premier League table any team can punish us.

“It was not good enough and sometimes we made the wrong decision in the final moment. It is very disappointing to not get three points and to concede goals like this.

“We try to block any outside noise out of the squad and group. We just want to get as many points as possible. There is still a lot of games to play, we want to get players back and experienced players and that will be very helpful. We just need to concentrate on every game and training session.”

The players will not allow for excuses. The club should not either.

Many will let their frustrations with Tottenham’s results boil over and disregard Son describing yet another loss as painful. Admittedly, after countless performances of this nature, the apologies and vows of renewed effort begin to weaken over time.

That being said, the only way out for Spurs is to continue working hard and hoping that a more complete squad will be able to find results and form to compete as the season goes on. This lack of accepting excuses from the players is essential for this.

However, that same mentality needs to be matched by the club. It is often mentioned how difficult transfer business is in the January window.

Nevertheless, when the repercussions of the club failing to back the squad and the manager are so clear, perhaps the board could do with emulating the same kind of drive and accountability that the players are displaying right now.
