Tottenham will need £58.9m to beat Chelsea to Bundesliga star
Tottenham are long-term admirers of Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie, however, Spurs would need to bid a near record-breaking amount to seal the signature of the Ecuadorian defender.
Tottenham have monitored Piero Hincapie for years
Despite signing Micky van de Ven during the 2023 summer window, it feels as if Tottenham have been perpetually searching for left-footed defenders since Jan Vertonghen left the club.
Rumours connecting Tottenham and Piero Hincapie have been going on since Antonio Conte was Spurs’ manager.
However, Hincapie’s stock has only risen since then. He was a starting player in Leverkusen’s undefeated Bundesliga title win and is highly sought after by clubs across Europe.
Bayer Leverkusen value Piero Hincapie at €70m
The latest edition of SportBild has indicated that Bayer Leverkusen expect to earn €70m (£58.9m) from any sale of Piero Hincapie, affectionately nicknamed ‘El Kaiser’ in Ecuador, in reference to the late Franz Beckenbauer.
Tottenham are joined by Chelsea and Napoli in admiring the defender. Atletico Madrid also made attempts to bring Hincapie to the Spanish capital in 2021 before he eventually joined Leverkusen.
However, after signing a new deal back in December, Hincapie is in no rush to leave the Bundesliga champions. After signing his contract, Hincapie described Bayer Leverkusen as like ‘a family’ having spent 3 and a half years at the club.
Tottenham are unlikely to spend £58.9m in January
While the way Tottenham play has changed, Hincapie’s versatility at being able to cover left-back or left-centre-back makes him an ideal candidate to help Spurs with their squad depth.
However, £58.9m would be Tottenham’s third-most expensive signing ever. Considering Tottenham have Van de Ven and Destiny Udogie as starting XI players, spending that amount on a non-guaranteed starter feels unlikely.
With Leverkusen only being open to parting ways with Hincapie for financial reassurance, it is unlikely they accept any deal that does not pay a significant chunk of value upfront.
Ange Postecoglou desperately needs a deeper squad and the board have suggested they are willing to back him. However, a January deal for Piero Hincapie feels difficult to envision.
