Divide emerging between fans and players

The current Spurs squad is full of extremely likeable characters, but one senses that a divide is growing between them and the supporters, with tensions now boiling over.

Tottenham’s latest 3-2 loss at Everton has left the club languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table, just eight points away from the relegation zone.

The away fans made their displeasure known to the players after the final whistle at Merseyside, with some unceremonious scenes taking place when Ange Postecoglou and the squad went over to the away end.

Pedro Porro on difficult situation at Spurs

Porro attempted to placate the angry fans after the final whistle at Goodison Park, but his efforts fell on deaf ears. When asked what he said to the supporters, Porro told Football.London: “I spoke with the fans to be together as a family.”

The 25-year-old explained that he is no stranger to adverse situations in his career, but pointed out that Tottenham are facing a unique challenge, given that they are still in four competitions despite missing so many players due to injury.

Porro continued: “Two years [before I arrived at Spurs], in Spain we were relegated with Girona, this was a bad moment, but now here it’s not only the fans [criticising], it’s us because we’re self-critical,” he said.

“No excuses, but you have now the reality that there are 11, 12, 13 players [fit to play] for four competitions. I think only one other team in England (Liverpool) is in four competitions, the Europa League, Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. The gaffer and the team are together, this is important.”

Porro ready to give his all for Ange Postecoglou

Porro is just one of a handful of Tottenham players this season who have not been sidelined yet with a serious injury.

Given the number of minutes that the Spaniard has had to play, fans might fear that he might be the next to break down, but the right-back is determined to do all he can to help the club come out of their current situation.

He added: “It’s okay because I work with the physio in the gym. The people outside don’t understand this situation, they say Pedro you have to rest, you haven’t rested. For me and Deki, and we’ve played full minutes this season, this is normal, this is football.

“Too many games, but I’m ready. If the gaffer asks ‘are you ready?’, I say ‘yeah, no problem’. Everything for the team, for the fans and for the club, it’s the most important thing for me.”
